Translation of a Rilke poem

Here is one of my favorite poems by Rainer Maria Rilke. Since I could not find an English translation, I’ve attempted my own. The poem was published in 1898 and has no title (it goes by its first line “Die Nacht holt heimlich durch des Vorhangs Falten”). You can find more details about it here. In my translation, I’ve attempted to preserve the special kind of cadence that is characteristic of many Rilke poems, including this one. 

Rilke’s original in German:

Die Nacht holt heimlich durch des Vorhangs Falten

Aus Deinem Haar vergessnen Sonnenschein.

Schau, ich will nichts, als Deine Hände halten

Und still und gut und voller Frieden sein.

Da wächst die Seele mir, bis sie in Scherben

Den Alltag sprengt. Sie wird so wunderweit:

An ihren morgenroten Molen sterben

Die ersten Wellen der Unendlichkeit.

The night draws slyly through the curtain’s creases

From your hair forgotten sunshine’s rays.

Look, I want nothing but your hands’ soft squeezes, 

and be still and good and full of peaceful daze. 

That’s where my soul expands - until from steady plying,  

It bursts the daily grind apart. It grows so wonderwide:

And on its dawning moles are dying, 

The first waves of eternal tides.
